ChinaJoy2017: Low-key bloom Microsoft MR device
From July 27th to July 30th, 2017, the 15th ChinaJoy expo took place at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, themed around "15 Years of Peers, Sharing Pan-Fun Entertainment." This year's exhibition spanned across 15 halls, covering an impressive 170,000 square meters, with participation from nearly a thousand domestic and international companies.
The event showcased a wide range of entertainment forms including PC online games, mobile games, console games, VR/AR experiences, esports, animation, films, music, and internet literature.
One of the major players in attendance was Microsoft, which didn't miss out on such a significant event. Their booth was strategically placed in Hall E7, right across from their long-time competitor, Sony.
Surprisingly, Microsoft’s booth didn’t feature a VR experience zone, given that their Mixed Reality (MR) headsets hadn’t been officially launched yet. Instead, they highlighted a somatosensory gaming experience area powered by the Kinect camera. Watching cosplayers perform intricate dances there was quite engaging.
However, while I initially thought Microsoft’s exhibit might lack focus on VR, I stumbled upon a display case tucked away in a corner housing both their MR headset and the latest Xbox console. A group of colleagues was striking various poses for photos next to it.
Among the prototypes on display, Dell had one, as did HP. Acer and Lenovo also presented their own versions of head-mounted displays. These cutting-edge devices sat alongside two powerful gaming consoles: the Xbox One S and the Xbox One X. The former, sleek and compact, seemed like the perfect upgrade for casual gamers, while the latter, with its enhanced performance, catered to enthusiasts looking for top-tier gaming experiences.
It was fascinating to see how these tech giants were pushing boundaries in the gaming world, offering both hardware and software innovations. The energy at the expo was palpable, and it felt like being at the forefront of a new era in interactive entertainment.
